Time to Talk About Toxins

What are toxins?

Toxins like Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are prescription drugs that, when injected, temporarily paralyze muscles. These injectables are used to treat moderate-to-severe facial lines and wrinkles that are formed by continual muscle contraction. For those who have never heard of Dysport or Xeomin before, you may be wondering, what’s the difference?

Botox Cosmetic

Botox was originally approved by the FDA for its treatment of eye and muscle spasms. Botox Cosmetic was quickly recognized for its cosmetic value. Properly placed injections of Botox Cosmetic block nerve impulses sent to muscles, weakening them to the point where they cannot contract, and temporarily eliminate moderately severe furrows and lines. Results can usually be seen within a few days of treatment, and typically last up to four months, although areas that are treated on a regular basis may retain results longer. In addition to its cosmetic applications, it is used to treat an abundance of medical problems, including excessive sweating, overactive bladder, neck spasms, crossed eyes, chronic back and jaw pain, and migraines.

Dysport

Similar to Botox, Dysport is also used to treat forehead furrows, frown lines, crow’s feet, and skin bands on the neck. When treating these with Dysport, often more is required than Botox Cosmetic. A rule-of-thumb is for every one unit of Botox needed, three units of Dysport would be needed to offer the same result. Although the two are made from the same bacterium, there is anecdotal evidence that Dysport injectable may last longer, spread farther and take effect more quickly than Botox Cosmetic. Dysport is also used to treat many of the same medical issues as Botox.

Xeomin

The greatest difference between Xeomin and the other two toxins, is its formula. Xeomin is known as the “naked” toxin, due to it only consisting of a single ingredient. Botox, on the other hand, consists of additives alongside the active molecule. Because of Xeomin’s pure formulation, the body is less inclined to create antibodies against it; allowing the desired result to occur. Xeomin is used to treat moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Just like Botox, Xeomin got its start from treating medical issues, when it was later approved for some cosmetic indications. Along with frown lines between the brows, Xeomin can be used to treat crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles. Unlike Dysport, Xeomin is dosed very similarly to Botox; one unit of Xeomin would offer the same result as one unit of Botox.
