Neck Lift Q&A

What is a neck lift?

A neck lift is a surgical procedure that improves the contouring of your lower face and neck. For many, this area of their body shows signs of aging before the upper portion of the face, making a neck lift an appealing alternative to a full facelift. For others, a neck lift is integrated into the facelift procedure to create a fully renewed appearance.

Some of the issues a neck lift can improve include:

  • Abnormal contouring due to muscle banding in the neck
  • Loose or sagging neck skin
  • Jowls, or sagging along the jawline
  • Fat deposits at or beneath the jawline

A neck lift is a great way to achieve a more youthful appearance and slow the visible signs of aging

Am I a candidate for a neck lift?

During your initial consultation at the Luminary Dermatology, you discuss your treatment goals with your surgeon. You learn what to expect from a neck lift and whether there are other procedures that are a better fit for your needs and goals.

Most healthy people can have a neck lift unless they have medical conditions that can get in the way of the healing process. Having realistic expectations is also important and helps ensure that your experience is a positive one.

If you are a smoker, the most impactful thing you can do to improve your cosmetic surgery results is to find a way to quit smoking. Smoking has a negative impact on your circulation and cell function, both of which are critical to healing. Quitting will help you get the most out of your procedure, both now and in the years to come.

What happens during a neck lift?

You receive medication to help you rest during the procedure and to ensure you remain still as the surgeon completes your neck lift. Depending on your anatomy and the degree of lifting that needs to be performed, the surgeon may choose how and where to place the incision.

Your incision might be located at your hairline above your ear, extending around the ear and into the scalp. A second incision may be necessary beneath your chin. A limited incision neck lift requires only incisions around your ear, but this approach does not enable dramatic results

Your surgeon then removes or rearranges the fat in your neck and lower face. They may perform liposuction, or you might need alteration to the muscles in your face or neck.

Once the surgeon is happy with the refined contouring, they redrape the skin and trim away any excess skin. The incisions are closed and bandaged to allow the healing process to begin. You receive detailed post-operative instructions before you head home. It can take a few weeks for the swelling and minor bruising to subside and the results of your neck lift to become apparent. You come in for follow-up care as needed.
