Breast Surgery Q & A

What is breast surgery?

There are wide varieties of breast surgery, all of which can adjust the shapes or sizes of your breasts to alter the way your breasts look. You can opt into these surgeries based on your personal preferences or expectations, or you might use breast surgery to restore your appearance after surgery or trauma. Some breast surgeries address other health complications too.

During your consultation at Luminary Dermatology, your surgeon talks to you extensively about your goals and expectations so they can plan and personalize your surgery. They fill you in on what to expect leading up to the surgery and what to anticipate as you recover.

What are my options for breast surgery?

Luminary Dermatology specializes in multiple breast enhancement options for your consideration. Depending on your personal goals and expectations, your surgeon might recommend one or more of the following surgeries:

Breast augmentation

Breast augmentation increases your breast size using implants made from either silicone or saline. You can decide which type to get based on your ideal size and texture. Many people get breast augmentation surgery with a breast lift, but you can get it by itself too.

Breast lift

Breast lift surgery elevates the position of your breasts on your chest. If you have drooping or sagging breasts, a breast lift can make them look more youthful.

Breast reconstruction

Breast reconstruction restores a more natural appearance to your breasts after they’re altered through trauma or surgery.

Breast reduction

If you have disproportionately large or heavy breasts, breast reduction surgery can size them down. Breast reduction may be mostly cosmetic, or you can get it to alleviate back pain from having heavy breasts.

Male breast reduction

Male breast reduction treats gynecomastia, which is the growth of breast tissue, often due to a hormone imbalance.

How long does it take to recover from breast surgery?

Breast surgery recovery varies based on many factors, including age, overall health, and the techniques your surgeon uses. As you recover, you should avoid strenuous physical exertion, smoking, and overworking.

On average, complete recovery takes between four and six weeks. Your surgeon may request to see you for a follow-up visit so they can check your healing progress and make sure your results look natural.
