Botox® Q & A

How does Botox work?

Botox is an injectable neurotoxin, also called a neuromodulator. It reduces wrinkles by relaxing the specific facial muscles that cause them.

Additional injectable neurotoxins available include:

  • XEOMIN
  •  Dysport

When injected into a targeted muscle, the neurotoxin injectable interrupts the signal from your brain that tells the muscle to contract. The overlying skin smooths out as the muscle relaxes, giving you a more youthful look.

What does Botox treat?

Botox is ideal for minimizing dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated facial movements over the years. Expressions such as smiling, frowning, and squinting create temporary wrinkles or creases in your skin. As time passes, wrinkles etch more deeply into the skin until they’re visible even when your face is relaxed.

A few of the most commonly treated areas include:

  • Vertical frown lines or “11s” between your eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead lines
  • Bunny lines on the bridge of your nose

In the hands of a credentialed injector, neurotoxins smooth these areas without leaving you looking unnatural or frozen.

Other wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial or vertical lip lines, may be better treated with dermal fillers.

How is Botox different?

Dysport has a faster onset time than Botox, for example, and XEOMIN contains fewer proteins for a more “pure” formulation.

Depending on your specific concerns, needs, and goals, your Luminary Dermatology injector will recommend the best product for you.

What are Botox treatments like?

After cleansing your skin, your Luminary Dermatology injector will use a tiny needle to perform a short series of injections that many people say feel like small pinches or insect bites. These quick, convenient treatments only take about 20 minutes.

Post-treatment, you can return to your usual routine, though you may notice some redness, swelling, or bruising around your injection sites for a few days.

How long do Botox results last?

Depending on the product used, your results may take between 2 and 10 days to emerge. Your smoother, younger new look will likely last about 3 to 4 months before it’s time for a maintenance treatment.

The best way to get an accurate pricing estimate is to schedule a consultation with an experienced Luminary Dermatology injector at one of the South Florida offices in Sarasota, Bradenton, Venice, and other communities.
